With A Vengeance...

Well I told you Mr Sewjo was back, and with a vengeance it would seem (for me).  Saturday night, the man was off out for a friends significant birthday, and I had the night in (pregnant persons can't be @rsed prerogative!), so of course, I decided to make a night of it and sew up a storm.

As I needed to get a start on the baby quilt for my friends little girl (now about 2 months old, eeeek!) I figured I would crack open the layer cake of Posy I won from the fabulous Aneela Hoey a couple of months ago.  Teamed with some Kona White, I set about making a pile of half square triangles the easy 4 at a time way.  After a couple of hours I had this big pile:
A big pile of HST's to trim, it's progress at least! :-)
Enough for 2 baby quilts, and decided to make one for my friends baby, and one for our new little one.  The design I liked for us was this one...
Think we'll go with this layout.
and then after a bit of a debate on Instagram when I couldn't 100% decide on the other design, and had a choice of two between
This layout? With a few blocks moved to tidy it up or other one?
and
2nd quilt, choice of this layout or....
I finally settled on the 2nd one, it was the one I thought I generally preferred, but just needed a bit of reassurance/confirmation.  Both of these quilt tops are now together and ready for basting, quilting and binding, which for me, is a miracle, now I just need to find a space for my sewing machine to be set us as the builders are back, and it's utter carnage in my sewing room with all of the boxes.

I am planning on making a few things for the baby, and am looking for some inspiration on good patterns either online or in books, and things others have found useful and cool.  Any suggestions and advice gratefully received ladies. :o)
And any tips for using minky as a backing fabric???

I just finished making a pair for my new niece. They were super cute, and the tutorial was easy to follow. When I was sewing them up at the end, I broke two needles, but I switched to a stronger needle, and they were totally worth it! :) Yay for baby sewing! It's my favorite kind!

  2. I like the choices you decided on. I've never used minky, but I think I would like to try it at some point...so soft! I think there are a number of free tutorials for baby things...try looking for bibs or burp cloths...on pinterest. Best wishes!

  3. Gorgeous quilts! I made two of Noodle heads divided baskets for our little dude to hold nappies etc, which has been especially useful post caesarean - less running up and down stairs :D

  5. I machine quilted with Minky just the once, I used a longish stitch and had a super glide on the machine. I used a polyester thread for a little ease and quite a few bad words. It was worth it in the end. I have used Minky in 2 more quilts and hand sewed them.

  6. Love the HST quilts-in-the-making! Couldn't advise you on baby makes, I recently only made small quilts as baby presents and you are thinking of that one all by yourself already ;-) Though the baskets sound a great idea...

  9. Oooh I love what you did with the Posy! :) Lovely!! I've found something that helps me tremendously with minky...it's washable adhesive tape (double sided). It's awesome....Yah, you can pin and pin and pin, but the minky still shifts - at least at my house it does! So, I found this tape stuff and it's amazing. I no longer hate minky. ;) Good luck and congrats on being prego!

  10. Cute! I have two tips for using minky as a backing. 1. Pin, pin, and pin some more. 2. Don't pin anything and send it out for quilting! No, seriously, I have backed a baby quilt with minky and I just pinned it much more densely than usual and it was fine to quilt.
